We are now able to offer volunteering at Carfest to Explorer/Ranger Units or District/County Groups, ideal for those looking for an alternative summer camp.
Participants are given the opportunity to experience a large-scale national festival event and gain some of the knowledge and skills required for an organization such as Scouting to participate in such an event; from the pre-event setup, through the running of the event to the final breakdown on site. They will be given the opportunity to join a team of staff and volunteers engaging with members of the public to facilitate a smooth and enjoyable event, with the ultimate goal of raising money and awareness for several national Children’s charities. They are also given the opportunity to learn and develop some of the skills needed to engage with members of the public, promoting the work and opportunities of Scouting, and dealing with enquiries aimed at growing and developing the Scouting movement.
Participants will be given the opportunity to interact with Scouting and non-Scouting volunteers at the event, as well as being able to enjoy some of the event’s attractions during downtime, both during the day and in the evening.
Arriving on Thursday morning, participants will be engaged every day in different aspects of the event, from the initial set-up through dealing with the public to the break-down at the end. of the event on Monday.
Details:
- Camping – participants will be camping with the other Scout volunteers during the event (please note that we have a separate section of our campsite for Explorers
- Catering – participants will be provided with a packed lunch on each day of the event, but are responsible for their own catering arrangements outside of this
- Shifts – participants will be expected to “work” for an average of 6-8 hours on two of the three days. Shifts may be in the morning, afternoon, evening or even at split times across the day (this is due to the nature of the event and needed to adapt to specific visitor numbers and event activities)
- You will be put into your own Group’s team or teams (depending on numbers) so that you will be working together and also to help you facilitate catering and free time for your whole group.
Some things to note:
- No camp fees!
- You will need to arrange your own transportation to and from the event.
- We would expect you to arrive on Thursday 27th August, and leave in the morning of Monday 31st August
- Your Group will need to organise its own catering during the event. You will be provided with a packed lunch on days you are working a shift, but we do not have the facilities ourselves to organise catering. You are welcome to cater for yourselves or use the numerous food outlets across the event.
- You will be expected to “work” two volunteer shifts over Fri/Sat/Sun
- Your Group will be responsible for its free time. you will have a full day, as well as free time on the two days you are working to explore the event and enjoy its many features and attractions.
- Every Group must have a designated leader to liaise with our management team.
- We would ask that the minimum Group size is 8. There is no maximum number, and depending on Groups size we will designate you into a team or teams for working shifts.
- Any groups with Explorers/Rangers in must have a minimum ration of 1 adult per 8, with a minimum of two adults (adult “leaders” must have a current DBS)
- Please note that the minimum age is 16 years old, this limit has been set by the event organisers for their own safeguarding policies and insurance purposes.
This is a unique opportunity for you to come and experience a national festival as a Scout Group. You can come along as your Explorer Summer Camp; a District or County Network looking for something different; a group of adults from within the same Group/District who would have paid to go to the event anyway; a joint Explorer/Ranger/Network activity to increase awareness and promote links between sections. Whatever the reason as long as you are willing to roll up your sleeves then we’re happy to have you join the team.
Interested? Then sign up here to join the team?
Please note that if you would like to attend the event as a Group we would ask that you email us directly before signing up in order that we can make the suitable arrangements and facilitate your Group’s participation.
