The Scout volunteers at BORN SURVIVOR work closely alongside other volunteers, as well as the event team representing themselves, Scouting, BORN SURVIVOR and the event partner charities. A typical shift is usually starts with a team briefing around 8am, and depending where you are volunteering could go through to approx. 3pm. In previous years Scout volunteers have carried out some of the following as part of their volunteering shifts:
- Working on the wristband exchanges, checking visitor tickets and allocating them the correct access passes according to their ticket – these volunteers are often the first smiling faces of the event visitors see after queueing up to park their cars.
- Marshalling the various obstacles around the course, advising participants how to tackle the obstacle, providing much needed vocal encouragement and if needed calling for assistance.
- Manning the various water and refuelling stations around the course, ensuring all participants are kept hydrated.
- Working with “feature” providers within the event, which involves working with some of the various content and feature providers at the event, helping them to deliver the different content and features to the public at the event.
- This is not an exhaustive list, and occasionally volunteers are asked by the organisers to carry out other duties, although when this happens it is optional and voluntary for each individual to consent to
We may also have a promotional stand at the event, and the Scout volunteers may be asked to help man the Scout stand as one of their shifts. This usually involves engaging with the public, taking details of interested contacts and facilitating any activity we may have at the stand.
Outside of the “shifts” they work on, volunteers time is their own, to enjoy the event and the various attractions and features.
